HYDRATED SKIN

HYDRATED SKIN

What does dry skin mean?

Dry skin is a very common skin disorder in the population. It is generally characterized by a rough feel, dull color and fine scales that are sometimes imperceptible. It can also lead to itching of varying intensity.

The most superficial part of the skin is made up of cells that are renewed approximately every 28 days. If there is a more accelerated turnover or if the layer of dead cells is retained in the most superficial part of the skin, it can take on the appearance of dry skin.
When the skin loses its usual state of hydration, the skin barrier function is altered. Therefore, the inconvenience caused may be greater than just an aesthetic problem, leading to injuries or the probability of skin infections.
There are environmental factors that contribute to facilitating the increase of skin dryness. Winter is the time of the year with the highest risk, since the wind, the cold and low humidity in closed environments can aggravate the symptom.
Excessive hand washing with degreasing or water-retaining substances, such as alcohol, hand sanitizer, soaps, etc., can cause the skin to take on a dry appearance.
How to contribute to skin hydration
The health of the dermis, which is the basis of the skin, influences the external appearance of the skin. The main component of the dermis is collagen, which in turn is made up of amino acids such as glycine, alanine, proline and hydroxyproline. It is necessary to maintain an adequate amount of collagen and its constituents to have a healthy skin.
Another essential component is coenzyme Q10, which acts as an antioxidant by slowing skin ageing. As we age, the production of Q10 decreases; therefore, it is important to incorporate it to maintain adequate levels that contribute to caring for our skin, thus avoiding the formation of wrinkles and skin dryness.
